Review 1 of 4

Summary:

I bought my DVM50U about 8 months ago for my trip to Hawaii. I was thrilled with it's size, features and video quality. I used it for that trip, but had some problems so I sent it in to be serviced. They fixed one problem (my sound was tinny and sometimes squealed), but not the video problem. I got it back, and when I opened the box, it was now recording red as hot pink. This was for Christmas, so my Christmas videos are pink and green. Note, that this is only a problem after I get it back from them - and starts as soon as I remove it from the box. I also noticed that I can't display only the date and time. I can only either display nothing or display date/time/timecode/speed/sound info. So I send it back reiterating the video problem it had already been in for, as well as the 2 new problems that it had immediately upon receipt of it after they fixed it the first time. Guess what, they charge me $80 and say they can't find anything wrong with it. I take it out of the shipping box and it is still showing red as pink and still won't display date/time. For the second time, I get it back with the problems still there. I wonder if they really even looked at it at all. All you have to do is turn it on and look at something red to see that it is showing up as a fuscia/pink color. So I've spent nearly $1200 and I can't use it in the condition it is in . And I don't want to send it in again for another $80 trip where they don't find any problems. I can not recommend this camcorder with service like this. I have emailed them and gotten no response too.

Strengths:

Size, features, digital video

Weaknesses:

Expensive, poor quality, bad service with repairs

Similar Products Used:

Sony camcorders.

Customer Service:

I haven't received a response to emails.

Summary:

The best thing about this camera is it's size! I make short ski/mountain biking films for use on my Web site, www.FeedTheHabit.com. This camera does really well and fits into any normal pocket. Easy to use and take along anywhere.

Strengths:

Size, digital format.

Weaknesses:

JVC lacks in quality and picture, but it works well for my applications.

Similar Products Used:

Canon Optura, Canon GL1

Customer Service:

No experience

Review 3 of 4

Summary:

This is my first digital camcorder and would probably be my last. So many features packed into a compact metal box! The compactness and relative fitness to my hand are what determined my purchase. I've had this thing for about 2 years and i still haven't used the camcorder to its full potential.

Strengths:

The size of the camcorder is a major plus. Although the next higher model is slightly smaller, the GR-DVM5 fits my hand well. The resolution of the LCD is great and having both the LCD and the optical viewfinder as an option is fantastic.

Weaknesses:

The battery that originally came with the camcorder has a short life (~20-30mins). Get the larger battery that mounts externally with the adapter and you'll be much happier.

Similar Products Used:

No other digital camcorders, but do have a excellant digital camera!

Customer Service:

Haven't had to call customer service yet.

Review 4 of 4

Summary:

It is small enough to fit in your shirt pocket so it can go anywhere. It only takes a second to be up and shooting. It's so light you can take one handed videos until your battery runs out. The output is professional level quality, in my opinion. I purchased the 9800 JVC which I love and went back and bought this for times I couldn't carry the larger camera.

Strengths:

Size, weight Outstanding video quality

Weaknesses:

Stills are stored on the tape and aren't very high resolution

Similar Products Used:

Customer Service:

Very Good
