Review 1 of 11

Price Paid:  $600.00 from Dell

Summary:

I've been using my ZR45 for over 7 months as of now (11/14/03), and I've found it to be an excellent camera. I have never tried to take still photos with it, because I already have a still camera for that. I use this camera for filming my Webshows. I have my own Webshow which is broadcast over the internet at www.loudmouthtim.com . It's called Online Video. So if you watch it you can see the ZR45 in action.

Strengths:

Easy to use, durable, excellent sound and video quality for a $600 consumer Mini-DV camera.

Weaknesses:

The "1 hour" battery is doing good to last 50 minutes at best, lens cap falls off if you look at it the wrong way or breathe on it too hard. No matter how carefully it is placed on the lens.

Review 2 of 11

Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:

Ergonomically sized, clear and crisp streaming video with not so clear still photos. Needs a perfect lighting to get a good picture (what are shots for anyway). Very poor picture at low light situations.

Strengths:

Size, functionality.

Weaknesses:

Could have come with an automatic flash for still pictures. Lux can go lower.

Review 3 of 11

Price Paid:  $359.00 from ibuydigital.com

Summary:

This is the first camcorder I have ever owned or used. I find it extremely easy to get good footage with very little effort or knowledge on my part. The housing is ergonomically very correct at least for my hands and it is quite comfortable to hold for a long time. The menu choices are easy to use and are intuitively thought out. Adjusting things like the exposure manually or the shutter speed for instance takes little time or effort. My only complaint you'll find detailed in the "weaknesses" block. Overall I think it's a lot of camera for such a low price.

Strengths:

Simple to use. Great quality for the price. Perfect for a beginner like myself, or anyone who prefers a camera that will do most things very well while set on auto.

Weaknesses:

Has a feature which forces you to remove the tape and makes the camera inoperable when it thinks the humidity is too high. A great idea on paper, a bad idea in the real world. Even at moderate levels of humidity it prompts you to remove the tape and then will not function. Then it takes a couple of hours in an air conditioned place to recover. This feature cannot be bypassed! I gave a performance rating of only 3 simply because of the humidity feature troubles. Overall it is quite a bargain.

Similar Products Used:

None.

Customer Service:

The camera arrived with no software or multimedia card. I called customer service and was shipped the missing items overnight air, no charge and was credited $10 for the inconvenience! However the software is only compatible with Macintosh 6.0 or Windows XP so it is worthless with my 98SE. I can't afford to upgrade to XP just to download still photos.

Review 4 of 11

Price Paid:  $600.00 from Circuit City

Summary:

I am 12 years old and have a burning passion for making home movies. I used to have a Canon ES970, but the features, picture quality, and sound quality just DIDN'T CUT IT for what I wanted to do. So, I begged my parents for the Canon ZR45 and finally got it for Christmas. (Aaand birthday, aaand had to work towards it!!!) Anyhow, I was impressed with the outstanding picture and sound quality, and convenient size of the camera. However, the collection of features it had to offer became very dull and unuseful very soon, and worst of all, I noticed this loud motor noise in the background when I played it back on my TV, which made it sound like a piece of crap. Overall, I don't think its picture quality, sound quality, useless digital effects, and ability to take still digital photos is worth what I paid at Circuit City. That is why I exchanged it for the ZR70 there, and am soon expecting that in the mail. But I learned a lesson: NEVER, EVER BUY THIS KIND'A STUFF AT A STORE AGAIN!!! For you see, the same exact camera was 300 n' something dollars on Royal Camera.com, and 600 dollars at Circuit City! Do the math!

Strengths:

Outstanding picture quality, (If you have the right lighting), OK sound quality, ease of use, and convenient, compact size

Weaknesses:

Motor noise in the background, small array of features

Similar Products Used:

Canon ES970 analog video camcorder

Customer Service:

NEVER BUY IN STORES AGAIN!!! Go online for MUCH BETTER PRICES!!! Believe me, you'll get RIPPED in stores!!!

Review 5 of 11

Price Paid:  $580.00 from normancamera.com

Summary:

This is an awsome camera. I took it to Key West and Vegas both in the extrem heat and humidity and the picture and sound were still awsome. I would buy it again if it were stolen.

Strengths:

size, build quality, warranty, and picture

Weaknesses:

costly upgrades like wide angle lenses

Similar Products Used:

sony TRV-140 which is nice but i like the ease of use and size of this one better

Customer Service:

Awsome I would buy from Norman Camera again. But watch out for those other online dealers most of them are not Canon Authorized.
