Review 1 of 6

Price Paid:  $300.00 from eBay

Summary:

The camera takes excellent quality pictures, and has a ton of built-in features to take advantage of. Definitely the best digital camera I've owned (so far).

Camera is best suited to still pictures, or those with only minor movements occurring. Good lighting (or at least, enough light for the flash to make up the difference) is a must. So far, I have not had good results with it in low-light or with fast-motion subjects.

Considering the price, the feature set, and the ease-of-use, this is a GREAT camera for beginners to intermediate level photographers.

Strengths:

+++ Resolution: 5.0 megapixels, with optical (and digital, for what it's worth) zoom
+++ Rotating / swivel-out preview LCD (this is a very nice feature!)
+++ Takes short-duration videos with sound (at relatively low resolution & sound quality)
+++ Great close-ups possible with manual-focus feature (default is auto-focus)
+++ Easy to copy photos from camera to computer (camera shows up as a USB drive, then drag-and-drop; or remove the CF card; Print/Share button)
+++ Built-in flash
+++ Zoom lens
+++ Easy to browse / delete photos while they're still on the camera
+++ Numerous shooting modes
+++ Numerous menu options and features I haven't even figured out how to use yet!!!
+++ Cost is low, and is more than offset by the high quality of photos, and the rich variety of features.

Weaknesses:

- Low-light shots are *probably* going to turn out poorly (unless you use a tripod)
- Shots of moving subjects are *probably* going to be blurry
- Takes 4 @ AA batteries, and battery life is relatively short -- always keep a spare set on hand, and use rechargeable to save $$
- Size and weight are significant -- similar to an old-time point & shoot 35mm. In other words, this is NOT a camera you just slide into your pocket and carry around for extended periods of time.
- Shutter lag is a bit tedious...I don't know what the published shutter delay is, but if your subject is fickle (e.g. a child), you need to press the shutter EARLY and hope it finally clicks the picture when your subject is cooperating.

Similar Products Used:

Rollei D41 Com, 4.1 megapixel; Zeiss lens; similar (but fewer) features than the Canon A95 -- also took great quality photos. Only real problems I had with the Rollei were:

* the shutter lag -- the Canon has a comparable issue.
* the software and/or driver that came with the Rollei was horrible. The A95 is MUCH easier to use.
* feature set on the Rollei was limited, compared to the A95.

AGFA ePhoto -- this is the very 1st digital camera I bought, back in 1999. Not really fair to compare it to the Canon, as the ePhoto was a non-zoom camera, with a top resolution of 1024 x 768...not even 1.0 megapixel! Needless to say, the A95 runs circles around the ePhoto, in all areas!

Customer Service:

N/A --> I have not had any issues with the A95 that would require me to contact Canon for service or support. I have taken good care of the A95, and it is still behaving nicely after the approx. 1 year I've owned and used it.

Review 2 of 6

Price Paid:  $400.00 from Sweden

Summary:

Very good pictures, very sharp! And colors are excellent. Good low light preformed with excellent battery life (NiMH). Good build quality. I’m not interested in movie mode (this camera is to take pictures not make movies and if I want movie camera I will buy a video camera). This camera looks like canon A85 or canon A75 in functioning with more pixels and Flip out LCD. The picture quality I think is better (is sharper) and better build quality (more metal). However this is cheap camera with very good result. If you use 2500 mAh NiMH battery, it never gets finish. I’m very impress with battery life. You have the same photo quality even to the last minute of batteries discharging which is making differences with another digital camera. One thing is not too important to me there is discharging warning in last minute. I think this is one of the best digital compact cameras in the market. This is a camera that you can take it everywhere with full manual control and 14 shooting modes + a special eight scene mode included for Foliage, snow, beach, fireworks, underwater, indoor, kids & pets and night snapshot help you to take your shot in every situation. I bought SanDisk CompactFlash 256MB Ultra II (write 9 MB/s, read 10 MB/s). This makes the camera faster.

Strengths:

1.In low light the camera focuses accurately. (AF-assist lamp). 2.The LCD has an auto-gain function (Visible in low light). 3.Full manual controls. 4.(There are 14 shooting modes + 8 scene mode). 5.Have very good micro modes. 6.Save favourite settings. 7.Excellent battery life. 8.Flip-out LCD (you can rotate it to 360 degree). 9.Excellent color. 10.Very good photo quality. 11.Easy to use. 12.Good software included. 13.Very good value for money (cheap). 14.Cheap CF cheap too.

Weaknesses:

1.Redeye (redeye reducing is not as should be). 2.Date printing is available only at the 1600 x 1200 resolution. 3.Plastic tripod Mount. 4.Steps zoom don’t give a flexibility to get the range that you want. 5.Charger and NiMH AA battery not included. 6.Memory door is plastic and not comfortable to open. 7.Batteries door is plastic and not comfortable to open too.

Price Paid:  $311.00 from Best Buy

Summary:

This camera is perfect for my needs. It fits all situations ranging from automatic to full manual control. For the less-experienced user who still wants the picture settings to fit the scene there are plenty of scene modes to use. The picture quality of the 8x10s I have printed is excellent.

Strengths:

Rotation LCD Scene Modes perfect for wide variety of situations Full Manual COntrol Style Uses CompactFlash which is larger but much cheaper than other forms of memory Accepts Lens Adapters

Weaknesses:

Can have slow shutter response 640x480 movie mode only 30 seconds Could have larger lcd Only 3x Zoom A little heavy Flimsy Memory Card Cover

Fuji E550 (I won this but chose to keep the A95 which I had purchased only one week before because overall I liked it much more) Canon S200 Pentax Optio S Olympus C-3000
