Summary:

I've had this camera for about a month and have been using it for professional assignments from day 1. It has performed exactly as I've expected it to do so. Up until now, I've been shooting exclusively on film and using consumer digital cameras for location scouting or pre-shoot trial shots (Eg. Minolta Dimage A-1) only. Before purchasing this camera, I researched all Nikon F mount D-SLRs extensively, from the affordable D-70 to D-1X as well as Fuji's S-3Pro. In the end, for my commercial photography application, I concluded that the Kodak comes closest to meeting my requirements, notwithstanding the limitations of the Nikon F/N-80 platform that Kodak had built this camera upon. Much criticism had been levelled by some people at many areas of this camera's performance. In my own experience with this camera, I found that I can live with almost all of its limitations, as its strength in the area of resolution gives me what I require of a D-SLR for my work not available from any Nikon based D-SLR currently made, nor soon to come. (The forthcoming Nikon D-2X does not surpass Kodak's overall resolution in technical specification nor does it have a full frame sensor for my existing wide angle lenses. If I have to buy a wide angle lens specifically designed for APS-C sized sensor, it will not work for my existing film based Nikon bodies...) Cutting to the chase, how does it work in the field or studio? I can now say that I'm glad I bought this camera. Its resolution is astounding and lends credence to Kodak's claims that this camera approches costly medium format digital backs in output. Criticism about its deep learning curve is another point I'd like to address on. I took delivery of the camera just 1 day before I had to fly out to my first assignment with this camera. I read the manual while handling the camera during the 2 hour flight and was shooting my first shots on location 3 hours after my arrival. My clients was rather happy with the results from this first sesson, and the camera nearly recovered its cost from this short trip. For those who are reading this review, you'll need to know that this camera is not about technical brinkmanship with the latest Japanese models, but it will allow you to craft great images when you allow yourself the time to think about your shots.

Strengths:

Great resolution that will show up faults of lesser quality lenses! Highly accurate colors and Kodak Film-like images. User menu with adjustments to more than enough imaging perimeters you can think about!

Weaknesses:

Slower than average turn-on time and long write times due to large file sizes. Finicky menu for longer exposure times (longer than 1 second setting). User menu with more than enough imaging perimeters you want to think about!

Similar Products Used:

I tested various Nikon F mount D-SLRs such as Nikon D-1X, D-70, Fuji S-2Pro and S-3Pro belonging to various colleagues.

Customer Service:

The camera's back-up button battery contacts became dodgy after the first week, but Kodak's tech service response was reasonably fast, and solved the fault by the next working day here in Singapore. The camera has worked flawlessly since.
