Price Paid:  $1300.00 from B&H Photo

Summary:

The Toyo 45AX is solid and rugged. I love it. The camera sets up quickly and the camera movements are very smooth. The 45AX doesn''t feel as fragile as other view cameras I''ve used.

Strengths:

Solid construction, lightweight, fits into a backpack.

Weaknesses:

none

Similar Products Used:

other 4x5 field and monorail cameras

Review 2 of 4

Summary:

I have loved large format photography since my first class on the subject. The cameras were large studio mono-rail types that were very cumbersome to use on location. Just over a year ago, before I graduated, I used my student status to purchase a Toyo. This camera has been a joy to use. It's small and light so it fits in a back pack easily and doesn't require an oversize tripod. I have taken this camera into the wild unknown many times. If you are a photo student and have to take a large format class, do yourself a favor and buy one of these. It has just enough movements to do some mild architecture shooting and will work very nicely in the studio. I know a lot of people that were totally turned off to large format because of the ungainly, clumsy cameras. Plus, if well cared for, this camera will have a good resale value. I can't recommend it enough. Also, make the leap and get the viewing hood at the same time. It's expensive, but it makes the camera that much easier to use. Worth every penny!

Strengths:

light, simple, compact

Weaknesses:

none

Similar Products Used:

various other 4x5 studio cameras
